Meals on Wheels was originally set up over 40 years ago to provide a hot meal for seniors who were unable to prepare a meal for themselves.
This is still our mission. The GFWC Sun City Center Woman’s Club, Samaritan Services and South Bay hospital work together to provide this needed service.
Various Sun City Center organizations and churches coordinate the deliveries each month. The delivery process is very simple. At least 2 drivers are needed every day for Kings Point and Sun City Center. Drivers arrive at South Bay Hospital at 3:15 PM. Each driver picks up 5-9 meals and a route sheet. Drivers put meals in each recipient’s cooler, and knock or ring the recipient's bell - greeting the senior at a social distance with a smile behind their mask. Then drivers go on to the next delivery. When done, drivers return to the hospital with the empty meal coolers and route sheet. The whole process takes a little over an hour for each driver. We deliver around 700 meals a month, 365 days a year.
Delivery people do not need to belong to a specific organization to deliver meals. The organizations delivering meals for each month are listed below:
January Beth Israel Jewish Congregation
February Daughters of American Revolution
April United Methodist Church
May Redeemer Lutheran Church
June Trinity Baptist
July The Men’s Club
September St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
October The Knights of Columbus
November St. John the Divine Episcopal Church
December The GFWC Sun City Center Woman’s Club
If you are associated with one of these organizations and are interested in delivering meals, you can contact that organization and volunteer.
If you'd like to help but do not belong to any of these organizations or would rather not work through them, you can volunteer through the GFWC Sun City Center Woman’s Club as a driver or back-up driver. If that is the case, complete and submit the form below. Someone will get back with you in a day or so
